SCLT works to tell our local and regional history through the lens of our natural resources, landscapes, and diverse cultures. SCLT’s historic projects offer community members and visitors to Sheridan insight into the local history of Sheridan County and the heritage of regional Plains Tribes.
Acme Power Plant
The Acme Power Plant Reclamation Project is a community effort to address environmental and safety concerns at the former Acme Power Plant.
Big Goose Walking Tour
These walking tour sites are located in the Historic Downtown Sheridan area with a focus on how Big Goose Creek was an essential natural resource for the valley’s early inhabitants, into the settlement era and right up to today.
Black Diamond Driving and Virtual Tour
The Black Diamond Trail will take you through the physical remnants of the once vibrant mining communities of Dietz, Acme, Carneyville (later called Kleenburn), Monarch and Kooi and more evidence of the past coal mining booms of Sheridan County.

Interested in how historic properties, structures, sites, and spaces can be preserved today so they aren’t forgotten tomorrow? Hanbury Preservation Consulting has provided the Historic Preservation Tools for Wyoming report which has a broad range of preservation tools that can work well in Wyoming.
History and Culture of the Bighorn Mountains
Three interpretive signs will notate the history and the heritage of the Plains Indian Tribes to the Bighorn Mountains. In the summer of 2021 the signs will be place along SCLT trails.

Iron Riders Trail Driving/Cycling Tour
Follow the route taken by the Black soldiers of the 25th Infantry Regiment Bicycle Corps in 1897 when they traveled through Sheridan County on their way from Fort Missoula, Montana to St. Louis, Missouri.
Mandel Cabin
Located in the Dorothy King Reflective Garden at Whitney Commons. This historic cabin was built by Gorge Mandel in 1881. It was used as a post office in Sheridan, Wyoming, in the late 1880s.
Historic Preservation
SCLT works with property owners to preserve the historic buildings, structures, and places that tell the story of our region. Through tools like Historic Preservation Easements, we help landowners protect important historic features while keeping properties privately owned and in use. SCLT can also assist property owners in exploring and preparing National Register of Historic Places nominations, helping recognize and safeguard sites that hold cultural, architectural, or community significance.
Sheridan Inn
The Sheridan Inn is a historical treasure to Sheridan, Wyoming and the building represents a rich local history and western legends. The Sheridan Inn is the first historical easement in the State of Wyoming.
Doc Huson
Preserving land, history east of Sheridan Conserved land and historic preservation working together in Sheridan County. In 2015, previous landowners Mark and Kim Tenneson celebrated a conservation easement and historical preservation easement to protect the land, the homestead, and the rich history that comes with it.
